blue jays are killing me
the blue jays are off to a rough start and it's genuinely painful to watch.
i know, i know — last year they were struggling early too and somehow went all the way to the world series against the dodgers. so i'm trying to keep the faith. but right now it's hard.
the offseason was exciting. the front office went all in — dylan cease on a 7-year $210M deal to anchor the rotation, kazuma okamoto coming over from yomiuri giants to hit in the middle of the order, max scherzer on a 1-year deal for veteran stability, jesús sánchez to shore up the outfield. felt like we were genuinely building something.
and then the injuries started.
springer out with a fractured toe. kirk out with a fractured thumb — that one hurts, losing your starting catcher early. berríos on a rehab assignment. bieber already moved to the 60-day il from elbow surgery. santander out until august for labrum surgery. barger just landed on the il with a sprained ankle. it's been relentless.
and the departures still sting. bo bichette gone to the mets, bassitt signing with baltimore of all teams. losing those guys hits different when you watched them build something here.
they just picked up lenyn sosa from the white sox to cover the infield and called up eloy jiménez from the minors to give the offence a spark. patchwork moves but what else can you do.
it's early. i'll keep watching. but man, the injury ward is brutal this year.
